《现代汉语大词典》是在现代语言学理论和辞书学理论指导下，以丰富、扎实的文献和口语语料为基础，以《现代汉语词典》为参照而编纂的一部系统记录100多年现代汉语词汇的大型原创性语文词典。经过中国社会科学院语言研究所编写团队和商务印书馆编校团队的努力终于出版。

全书共五卷，收录单字字头1.3万多个（按照规范标准确定字形、字音，梳理简繁、正异、异读关系），单字和复音词总计15.7万条（其中百科词语约2.5万条），配例40多万个，计1200多万字，是我国迄今为止收词最多、义项设立最全、规模最大的一部现代汉语词典。

在编写过程中，编写团队始终秉持共时性与历时性、规范性与描写性、学术性与实用性相结合的编纂理念。在共时与历时的层面上，词典将五四运动前后以来100多年的现代汉语看作一个与社会的变迁息息相关的动态发展变化的历史时期，着力在共时中动态地记录和反映词汇的历时变化，突破了共时词典静态描写的范式。
